What is a Dental Assistant

A dental assistant is an oral health care professional who works closely with and under the supervision of a dentist. Depending on the type of dental practice the duties of the dental assistant will vary. In Newfoundland, dental assistants practice both I and Level II duties.

Level I (Chairside) Duties:

  • Prepare and seat patients

  • Charting patient information

  • Sterilization of instruments and clinical area

  • Preparing dental materials and cements

  • Assisting in dental procedures

  • Processing and mounting radiographs

  • Pouring and trimming cast models

  • Providing patient education and post-operative instructions

  • Maintaining and ordering of dental supplies

    Level II (Chairside and Intra-Oral) Duties:

  • Level I chair side assisting

  • Radiography

  • Preliminary Impressions

  • Rubber Dam

  • Treatment Liners

  • Matrices & Wedges

  • Selective Rubber Cup Polishing

  • Oral Hygiene Instruction

  • Dietary Counselling

  • Fluoride Application

  • Topical Anaesthetic

  • Desensitizing Agents

  • Ortho Module
